Erie Maritime Museum and U.S. Brig Niagara
The Flagship Niagara League
In 1990 a retiring doctor said to his wife, “We need to find something to do now.” They saw in the Erie newspaper an article requesting Guides on the U.S. Brig Niagara. “That’s for us!” he exclaimed, and they shot right down to the Holland Street Pier, where Niagara was then berthed. For thirty years, Maxine and Jack Gold have been involved in guiding and imparting their vast knowledge to guests, welcoming aboard all to the ship and later into the museum.
Jack, a World War II veteran, passed away in 2019. Maxine, a former business and office worker, still guides tours and shares with guests and school children the history of our ship, the War of 1812, and the Battle of Lake Erie. School groups often request Maxine’s tours specifically. Besides being great guides and strong advocates for the museum, Jack and Maxine were also scholars of these histories and the functioning of the Niagara. In 2018 they donated their library of books and Jack’s copious notes, news clippings, and small pamphlets to the Erie Maritime Museum Guide and Greeter Corps.
