Sept. 6-8: Anthracite Heritage Conference—this year's conference marks the 150th anniversary of the Avondale Mine Disaster (full schedule on website). Sept. 12: Episodes in Anthracite Labor History—speakers will cover a range of topics from the earliest days of anthracite mining in Pennsylvania through World War II (see website for list). Program is free. 7-8:30 pm.

Brandywine Battlefield

Sept. 11: Remembrance Day—the annual ceremony commemorating the Battle of Brandywine, Sept. 11, 1777, and the events of Sept. 11, 2001, will be held. Event is free. 6-7 pm.
Sept. 24: Revolutionary Dining Series—this month's dinner and lecture are planned in conjunction with a new exhibit at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia (Sept. 28, 2019-March 17, 2020). "Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier" focuses on Richard St. George, veteran of the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. Held at The Gables at Chadds Ford, the cost is $50 per person (includes salad, entree, dessert, and lecture). Check Brandywine's website for reservation info. 6-9 pm.
Bushy Run Battlefield
Sept. 7: Paws in the Park—this new event celebrates one of the site's biggest audiences - dogs and their walkers. Activities will include an obstacle course, DIY pet item stations, paw print art, a scavenger hunt, a caricature artist, photo booth, and more! There will also be a concession stand featuring a themed hot dog bar menu, a basket auction, and a small, special exhibit on display in the museum. Sept. 18: History Speaks Series—Aaron Hollis will present “Distilling Whiskey” (see Facebook event page for more info). Cost is $10 in advance, $12 at the door (members get a 10% discount). Contact Bushy Run Battlefield at 724-527-5584 for advance tickets. 7 pm.
UPDATE Sept. 21: Fall Nature Walk—learn about the flora and fauna of the woods around the battlefield with herbalist Lindsey Praksti (more info on Facebook event page). Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Cost is $5 per person, free for members. 10 am-noon.
NEW Sept. 26: Historic Sewing Workshop Series—this four-part series is open to people at all skill levels. Each workshop will have a one-hour of formal instruction on 18th- and 19th-century techniques, followed by an hour of open studio time to work on your own projects or practice in a group setting. Additional dates are Oct. 10, Nov. 14, and Dec. 12. See the Facebook event page for details on how to register. 6-8 pm.

Sept. 15: Living History Sunday—today's event explores children's activities in the 18th century. Living history demos are free; donation requested for the corn husk doll activity. A discounted admission fee will be charged for tours of the Keith House. Noon-3 pm.
Sept. 26: Homeschool Day—activities include tours of the Keith House, open-hearth cooking, colonial games, and typical chores (program flyer). Cost is $6 per person; students must be accompanied by a responsible adult. 10 am-2 pm.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum
Sept. 1: Plein Air Sunday: A Celebration of Traditional Craft—visit the Yellow Barn and the Millstone Grove to see and buy the work of artists and craftspeople; featured will be artwork created en plein air (in the outdoors) at Landis Valley (see Facebook event for details and updates). Sept. 28: "Escape" Landis Valley—it's 1777 and the British have invaded Philadelphia. Can you solve the puzzles to help the Continental Congress get through Lancaster on their way to York? You must register ahead of time if you want to find out. Program times are 10 and 11:30 am, 1 and 2:30 pm. Sept. 28: Introduction to Blacksmithing—this is a basic intro taught by John Frankowski and Ben Delaney, who regularly demonstrate blacksmithing at Old Economy. Through Sept. 15: "We Can Do It" WWII exhibit—this traveling exhibit from the Heinz History Center will be on view through Sept. 15, with additional Somerset County details through a partnership with the Turkeyfoot Historical Society. Included in regular admission.
Sept. 6-8: Mountain Craft Days—since 1970, this event has brought together artisans and craftspeople of all types, and now includes children’s activities, cooking demonstrations, entertainment, and great food (visit SHC's website for details). Admission charged. 10 am-5 pm.
Sept. 20: Writers Workshop—SHC will host "Historical and Contemporary Research for Fiction: Shape Your Characters, Turn Your Plot & Bring Your Setting to Life," part of the 2019 Festival of Books in the Alleghenies. Registration is required and is being handled by Festival of Books (info and registration links). 2-3:30 pm.

Sept. 4-Oct. 4 (weekdays only): 2019 Fort Hunter Archaeology Excavation—come learn about field archaeology and what the museum's archaeology crew have found at Fort Hunter. (On Sept. 20, the museum's 3rd in the Burg program will take place at Fort Hunter from 4 to 6 pm.) Archaeologists will be available 9:30 am-4 pm weekdays, weather permitting.
Sept. 6: StoryTime—this month's program takes place in Ecology Hall with a reading of Because of an Acorn by Lola M. Schaefer. Designed for ages 3-5 with an adult. Included in regular admission. 10:30-11:30 am.
Sept. 6: Learn at Lunchtime—museum docents will be on hand in the 2019 Art of the State exhibit, which closes on Sept. 8. Included in regular admission. 11 am-1 pm.
Sept. 8: Last day for Art of the State—the annual juried art exhibit closes today. The museum is participating in Harrisburg's Gallery Walk, so admission is free. Hours of operation are 11 am to 6 pm today only (please note that Curiosity Connection will be open from noon to 4 pm as usual and that planetarium fees still apply). From 2 to 3 pm join curator Amy Hammond and featured artist Sanh Tran (1st prize in photography and recipient of this year's Purchase Award) for a casual tour of Art of the State.
Sept. 12: Curiosity Kids—today's event is "Tinkering Minds," inviting kids 3-6 (with an adult) to explore their creativity (more info). Included in general admission, but there is a limit of 20 kids, so be sure to sign up at the Ground Floor desk when you arrive. 11:30 am.
Sept. 26: Nature Lab—learn more about two familiar PA birds, the ruffed grouse and the wild turkey. Included in regular admission. 11:30 am.
